News programs have become a popular and are competing for attention alongside other popular programming telecasting on diverse channels. Every major broadcaster is including at least one news channel in their repertoire. The most difficult part of the launch of a satellite channel is to programme software for continuous operation. Newsgathering is an essential task for the 24-hour news channels. To fulfill this requirement the new digital channels have been trying to keep track of all events regardless of location, position and time. They have not only changed the concept of news broadcast on Indian television, but also reshaped the news formats. Before the 1990s Doordarshan had been the sole newscast on Indian television. It also made newscasts into a boring exercise. Today, the private channels have transformed news into a vital product, like clothing, food and shelter. Golf War - The Catalyst Post-1990 , satellite television in India has become transnational in nature. This was the result of the entry of multinational companies to the Indian markets, under the Government strategy of privatization. International satellite television was first introduced in India by CNN through their coverage of the Gulf War in 1991. In August 1991, Richard Li launched Star Plus which was the very first satellite station that beamed the signal to the Indian subcontinent. The channel of Subhash Chandra's Zee TV appeared in October 1992. It is India's first private-owned Hindi channel to meet the needs to Indian viewers. The fire was ignited by Sony and, a bit later by local channels like Eenadu, Asianet and Sun TV. Entertainment channels had started to take center stage in the organization's programming strategies and advertising was beginning to be the principal source of revenue. The earlier mission of Doordarshan to assist in the process of economic and social development was evidently diluted. Doordarshan was in the midst of a fierce competition in the news and public affairs programming from international channels such as BBC as well as CNN. Doordarshan had planned to offer slots for news programs under the sponsored categories. It was in February of 1995 that NDTV was the very first private producer of national news program 'News Tonight'. Major Players The monopoly was shattered by Doordarshan in 1992 when private channels slipped into the Indian borders and entertained viewers as much as they could. At the beginning of the 1990s, the private channels offered only entertainment programmes. The entertainment channels include family drama, comedy serials animated children's shows movies, talk show and recipe shows musical concerts non-fiction shows, etc. Private entertainment channels added some infortainment programmes in their Fixed Point Charts (FPC). To meet the demand for infotainment programs in mind the media houses began to create magazines for entertainment, news, and news programs for various channels. India's top business and consumer news broadcaster and the most prestigious producer of media-related content, Television Eighteen India Limited (TV18) launched India's first entertainment magazine 'The India Show which was aired for Star Plus in 1993. This new media powerhouse offered prime time television programming to nearly all of the top satellite channels across India comprising BBC, Star Plus, Sony Entertainment Television, Zee, MTV and Discovery. After The India Show, TV18 created a weekly business news program called India Business Report for BBC World. Indian viewers had a few choices (like the public broadcaster Doordarshan, BBC and CNN) to view the TV news. For televised news, the viewers had to watch Dordarshan as well as some international news channels such as BBC and CNN. In the race to deliver additional news, more details, Zee Television jumped into the fray by launching the Zee News, a news network Zee News in 1995. The News along with the channel for current events revolutionized the way news was communicated to the viewers. Since its beginning, Zee News has endeavoured to be the fastest to deliver news, and is working towards an unifying goal called Sabse Pahle (Always first). Another round-the clock news channel owned by Murdoch Star TV beamed its exclusively 24-hour news channels Star News in 1998. Star signed a contract for five year with Prannoy Roy's NDTV (New Delhi Television Co.) to provide news content for this news channel.
